THINGS THAT FOREIGN STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW FOR STUDYING IN TURKEY
Turkey can be good choice for undergraduate and graduate students because universities have good world ranking , succesful academicians and laboratory facilities in Turkey.
To have higher education, which necessitates at least 2 years education, students must complete secondary education. Higher education institutions includes bachelor, master and doctoral programs; institutes, conservatories, faculties and vocational schools.
Turkey has 53 public universities and 24 private universities. And 1.9 million students are studying in these universities.
Requirements About Admissions To Undergraduate Programs In Turkey
Candidates who want to study in public or private universities should apply to these universities themselves. Because each universities have their own entry requirements and they will never accept students in Turkey except for these conditions. Generally, the students admitted to universities in Turkey if they have these the following conditions:
- They will need secondary education diploma and transcript that shows the high school grades.
- They will need enough points from exams that are internationally valid; such as, GCE,ACT,SAT. Or they should have score that requested from Foreign School Examination.
- Other requirements are announced on other universities’ own websites.
What is Foreign Student Examination ?(YÖS)
In every country and in Turkey, education system wants to see foreign students obtain a valid score for having education in Turkey. In Turkey, Foreign Student Examination (YOS) this exam measures different qualities or talents.
YÖS include 2 stages. Firstly, students are supposed to pass ‘Basic Learning Skill Test.’ This test aims to measure abstract thinking and in this test there are also English explanations to avoid some language barrier. In the other stage, students have ‘Turkish Test.’ Its aim is about understand, comprehend and interpret expressions. 2 tests are very important; however, some universities give importance to ‘basic learning skill test’, others may give importance to ‘Turkish test.’
Students who are citizens of Turkish Republic and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are not entitled to take this exam. These students can apply to schools with their high school diploma.
Just foreign students can take YÖS exam.
Master And Doctorate in Turkey
In Turkey, graduate programs mean that Master, Doctorate, qualification or specialization in arts and medicine. We can see 2 types of Master programs as Master with thesis and without thesis. Master with thesis consist of 7 courses, seminar and thesis studies and Master without thesis consist of 10 courses and term project.
In doctorate programs, students are supposed to take at least 7 courses, proficiency exams and thesis proposals. To complete a doctorate program, students have 4 years. However, to complete whole program, they have 8 years. Doctorate candidates must have master degree. Medical specialization programs are carried by university hospitals, hospitals connected to Ministry of Health and hospitals connected to the Social Insurance Institution.
Foreign students who would apply to Graduate Programs have to have diploma, transcript,reference letter and motivation letter. The reference letter can be taken from a professor of your school. In motivation letter, students write about why she/he wants to have entry to a graduate program. In order to have entry to graduate programs, they need have ALES exam result or other international exam result.
Education Language in Turkey
You know that language is barrier for students who want to study in a foreign country. In Turkey, you can see universities whose language are both English and Turkish. Students are supposed to complete language proficieny exam. They who could not pass the exam have to take a language education before departmental courses.
